God on His Side

A couple of weeks ago, local Sydney player IM-elect George Xie exhorted the Australian chess community to rediscover their faith. "It is time to return to God", he said.

Well, this devout believer must have been blessed by his Creator for he has just won the 2006 Coffs Harbour Open played over the weekend. Xie topped the event on 6.5 points out of 7 rounds. His run included a win over visiting grandmaster Dejan Antic.

Black lost on time.

Of note also was the performance of Sydney junior Max Illingworth. He collected 5.5 points, including a draw also against Dejan Antic.

I didn't know Antic is in Australia. Will you get a chance to meet him?

Maybe Goran. I might see him in Canberra, if not sooner. I think he's playing in the Aus Open.

I see people are genuinly surprised at the performance of the juniors at this event. Having played in Queensland and having observed their performance first hand, I am not in the least surprised by the good score obtained by Sam Grigg and his cohorts. The Queensland Chess scene is truly blessed to have so many children take up the game of chess and score so well in one of the premier tournaments in the country. Well Done!
Congratulations to George Xie on his win!
