Those guys at the NSWCA are a shy bunch, aren't they? They never tell us anything. Not even when it's important news, you know, like getting a sponsor!
Waiting for me today was the usual pile of murdered trees from our state chess association. To my surprise, the leaflet announcing the details for this year's state chess championships has, in big bold headline, "2007 Integra NSW Championships". Integra who? It's a sponsor. What else could it be? But is there a URL for Integra in the leaflet? Nope! None. What about on the NSWCA website? No info there either, no announcement, nothing.
Talk about keeping a business partner unhappy right from the get-go!
TCG isn't so horrible, really. So we'll just have to do these NSWCA guys a favour. My dear readers, if you ever need water treatment solutions or just need to know about them, Integra's your mob. Thanks to Google, you can check them out here.
Look, honestly, just for scoring the arrangement - that's well done. And I swear, it's not the Elliot Rock Estate merlot talking right now.

Although there is little mention of the sponsor on the actual entry form, only a small 'logo' at the bottom, there is in fact mention of the sponsor in the green July bulletin and the sponsor's webiste is also included.
hey is it true GM Ian Rogers is retiring from professional chess?
do u reckon he will make more money from just coaching anyway?
thanks
Amiel, if you like their reds then why don't you visit Mudgee on the way to Blayney in September? Brian
Just when I thought the NSWCA could not be any more useless, they go and get some sponsorship. (But I wonder why LOL.)
In any case, It is a first step in the right direction. Good job - keep it up.

I wonder if the sponsor knows the NSWCA bans players willy nilly. Should I tell the sponsor?
Sponsorship comes with certain obligations.
Good to see that the NSWCA appears to be listening to those who post comments on TCG's blog, as I have been one of the complainers about the NSWCA never getting sponsorship for any of its events. This is indeed a positive development. Its also good to see that after TCG's article that they have fixed up their website and now have a link to Integra, although it should not have needed TCG to point this out [seems to me that incompetence is still very deeply ingrained in the NSWCA, although this obtaining of sponsorship is some long overdue good news].
Of course the NSWCA still need to do more. The website is hopeless and the latest newsletter is only marginally better than the April one. TCG is right, in its present form the NSWCA newsletter is just a waste of trees.
Yet I am puzzled as to why there is only $2600 in prizemoney for the Integra State Champs, which is based on 60 entries. Assuming an average entry fee of $70 per player collected, this means a total of $4200 is collected from participating chess players. Surely with sponsorship there would be more decent prize money on offer? Where is the Integra money going? Into NSWCA's pockets?

You obviously have no idea do you?
Running a tournament is not as simple as lets give all the entries back as prizes.
What about other costs such as
Venue
Arbiters fees
Advertising and promotion
Administration fees
Do you honestly think a new sponsor has offered to put up a huge amount of money to support a failing event which obviously all NSWCA players whinge about but dont support. Has it ever occured to you num nuts that they put in a small amount of money for the first year (testing the water)
I am urging all NSWCA players who want to see this event continue to be sponsored and organised to please support the event.
In response to Bozo the clown [the previous poster], I actually do have a few clues about the expenses involved in running a chess tournament. I would have expected that with sponsorship that something approximating all entry fees would be returned to the players as prize money [unless you are suggesting that the sponsorship money is in the order of something trivial like $20 or $50]. Surely the NSWCA would have got at least $1000 for naming rights to the State Champs which lasts over 9 weeks?
If you have ever played in a State Championship and experienced the incompetent way that the NSWCA run it year after year you would know why numbers are so low, yet you seem to think that chess players should treat the NSW Champs like a charity. We can only hope that now that the State Champs have sponsorship this will make the NSWCA lift its game. After the last State Champs that I played in which was a debacle I want to see evidence that the NSWCA can run a State Champs competently before I will again play in one. If the 2007 State Champs end up being well run and successful then I will probably play in the 2008 State Champs.
If you want to be the premier chess BLOG of the Region T.C.G. you need to have less of the filler articles on fancy chess sets, and paltry $500 sponsorships of the biggest event in the biggest State, instead give us your views on the inside track taken by Gletsos-Burgess to win the Aus. Championship .
