Vietnam Bid For World Youth

The World Youth Chess Championships could just be in Australia's doorstep for the 2008 edition. The Vietnamese Chess Federation has reportedly expressed an interest in hosting the event. But they will need $1 million!

How can a youth tournament possibly cost 1 million dollars to organise?

Sounds like dodgy FIDE costing here...lol

Because you have to provide free food and accommodation for about 800 people, not to mention pay arbiters, venue hire, equipment etc. The entry fee goes to FIDE not the tournament organisers....

Im aware of the free accommodation and food. Still sounds like "olympic" inflation figures to me.

Lets not forget this is Vietnam and not France here. lol

No doubt everyone does have their fingers in the kitty, but it would still take a huge amount of money to fund. Most of them try and offset the free food and accommodation with secondary entries and parents but initially you would have to budget on conservative numbers and most of them free. Turkey is providing 5 star accommodation this year - maybe Vietnam is planning to do the same - even in "cheap" countries that racks up a few dollars....
