Chao: I'm very happy

The Philippines' ABS-CBN reports that Chinese player GM Li Chao has just won the 2nd Philippine International Open. He goes home with US$6000. Chao was declared winner on tiebreak after five players ended with 8 points at the eleventh round mark. Two Pinoys, IM Julio Sadorra (contrary to the report, Julio is still an international master) and GM Bong Villamayor were among the 8-pointers.

Hi Closet Grandmaster, I am a regular visitor of your blog. I find your featured games and regular updates very useful. Did IM Sadorra obtain his second GM norm on the recent Philippine Open? Since he tied for first place with GM Villamayor and three others, arent they suppose to share the prize money for the first to fifth places equally? A lot of unrated pinoys have finished six and 6.5 pts. Did they obtain any IM or FM norms? Thanks.

No, Sadorra did not get the GM norm. The required performance rating was 2600, and he "only" achieved 2598. A narrow failure.

Senador and Nelson Villanueva got 9-round IM norms. This being Senador's 4th IM norm, he should be getting the full title already

By the way, there is no such thing as an FM norm. To get the FIDE Master title, all you have to do is attain a rating of 2300. Then it is all a matter of paying the registration fee.

Thanks Sir, I am very grateful for your reply. Anyway, I am happy for Senador and Nelson Villanueva, both from Western Visayas. Congrats.

For Mr. Bobby Ang,

Hi Sir,

I just remembered having emailed you a few years ago. I dont remember specifically what that was but I know it was about chess. My email is jongrace64@hotmail.com. Thanks a lot. By the way, what does it require for a pinoy chesser to earn an NM title? I regularly visit this blog, almost daily coz I find it very informative and helpful. Thanks again.

There are no published rules on how to attain a National Master title in the Philippines.

Way back in 2000 when I was still the Executive Director of the NCFP, Mr. Elmer Sangalang and NM Glenn Bordonada were commissioned to draft the rules on attaining the title, and I remember they produced a draft. For one reason or another, though, this seems to have been junked.
