Glory! Glory! Glory!

Amazing! Unbelievable. Wonderful. Tremendous. Awesome. Beautiful! What more can I say? The heroic Australian football team made it into the round of 16 in the World Cup after drawing with Croatia this morning. And what a bizarre game too with one Croatian player being issued 3 yellow cards before he was red carded!

No matter, we made it. I am just absolutely beside myself. I couldn't stop singing this morning, belting out a couple of arias in the bathroom. Woohoo! And who cares if Kewell may have been offside? At least for once we deserve a bit of refereeing decision on our side. Would you believe that two obvious in-goal penalties were missed by the officials? Once was a rugby tackle on Viduka and the other a handball by a Croatian.

By the way, the ref and both linesmen were English. Funny that!

Bring on the Italians! C'mon Aussies!! My God, at this rate, I'll be so adequately inspired I might even qualify for Linares next year.

Oi Aussie! Congrats! :-) Being Everton fan, my favorite player is Cahill. Graham is best english arbiter, can't believe he got so confused.

Good luck against Italy

That was the worst game by a ref in a world cup that I have EVER seen, and I have watched every world cup since 1970.

Putting the 2 obvious penalties that were not awarded to Australia aside and Kewell's offside goal, how could he possibly forget that he had given Simunic 2 yellow cards already? The ref has to write his name down when he gives any player yellow and red cards.

Simunic must be the only player in world cup history to receive 3 yellow cards in a game!

And as for that 2 balls on the field trick by the croatians...absolute joke.

As an englishman who has lived in Australia for the last 15 years I humbly apologise for that debacle.

Hopefully in the next round you will get a ref who can count and can award obvious penalties.

Nice blog by the way. Cheers!

It seems that FFA might be spurred on now to seek a world cup hosting bid for Australia in 2014 or 2018. If only Australian chess players could perform equivalently at a forthcoming Chess Olympiad or convert a few IM penalties into GM goals and maybe succeed in getting chess olympiad hosting rights at the same time. Too much of a dream? I wonder ...

Interesting article about Poll can be found above. He's quit international football. Sounds like a nice guy and normally an excellent ref... it's a bit sad how he performed!
