Details are sketchy at the moment, but last night we received word from Pinoy journo Marlon Bernardino of a possible defection by Arianne Caoili back to Philippine ranks. Mr Bernardino cites RP men's coach Sammy Estimo as the source:

WIM Arianne Bo Caoili wants to don the Philippines colors once again. This was revealed by RP Turin Olympiad men’s head coach lawyer NM Samuel “Sammy” Estimo, incoming executive director of the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP).

"Arianne (Caoili) talked with me regarding this matter during the last round of the Turin Olympiad. She wants to represent the Philippines at the 2006 Doha Asian Games this coming December and other international events like the 2007 Thailand SEA Games and the 2008 Dresden World Chess Olympiad in Germany”, said Estimo in an exclusive interview with NCFP publicist Filipino and US chessmaster Almario Marlon Bernardino Jr.

"I told her that it is possible , as in the case of Filipino Canadian Alex Pagulayan in billiards and Filipino American Cecil Mamiit in tennis during the 2005 SEA Games in Manila , but we should first discuss it in the NCFP Board and she should also hurdle the qualifying round, in which she agreed” added Estimo, a two-time Olympiad member.

We have sent urgent messages to Arianne via email and SMS to seek clarification of this stunning development, but so far there has been no reply.

Seeing the way some people in Australia criticized her over the punch up incident I dont blame her.

At least she will be with a federation that takes chess a little more seriously.

nothing to do with the punch up incident...maybe don't get along with the oz team, or australian chess is not sponsored, more important in the Philippines, maybe just discussion, thought, why don't we all wait and see, may be nothing, as for Australian chess what did she do for us? All her best was when she was much younger, and played for the Philippines...it's a quick change if she does infact switch, yet again, hardly few years with oz,
not much representation at all. Clearly not loyal to either country. So what anyway, what's the big deal with Caoili? Is her chess that great to even care?

Arianne Caoili donning the Philippine colors? Ill rather stay with Perena,Lomibao,Cua's,Mendoza,Mariano's,Camacho,Kunanan,Dimakiling et all! But Hey THailand SEAG 2007? HMMMMMMM Yup we need Team Members for Salsa competition! I think we are the defending champion on this stuff, but i heard you need to go to qualifying stages.

Whats the big deal with Caoli?

Well she used to be rated above 2300 and she does have an IM norm.

If Arianne does decide to focus seriously on chess, and I hope she does, she could make serious gains in her game.

The other australian female players are not interested in being professional players, they would rather work in the coaching industry,I dont have a problem with that choice as the regular money is hard to resist.

But if australian chess is to go anywhere we need people, both male and female ,who are serious about studying and competing. Otherwise it will be the same old faces for the next ten years or more.
Taking out the soviet imports,Australia has only managed to get 4 strong juniors above the 2350 mark in 20 years!

Half a dozen serious players could galvanize australian chess and get more people interested in organising professional chess tournaments in Australia.
This will have a flow on effect for the players who are 2100-2250 who might be considering becoming chess professionals.

CAOILI, SERIOUS ABOUT CHESS, WHAT ARE U ON? SHE LOVES BOYS, LIFE, LATIN DANCING, SINGING, JAZZ, AND JUST ABOUT EVERYTHING ELSE. LIKE HER RESULTS SHOW LAST FEW YEARS, SERIOUS STUDY, TRAINING, PLAYING CHESS AS PROFESSIONAL, IS NOT ON HER AGENDA! SURE LIKE ALL CHESS LOVERS, ESPECIALLY IF YOU WERE ONCE A CHILD PRODIGY, AND HAD SOME GOOD RESULTS, WHO WOULDN'T WANT TO ACHEIVE GM TITLE? OBVIOUSLY CAOILI DOES NOT PUT THE EFFORTS INTO HER CHESS THE WAY SHE DOES OTHER THINGS IN LIFE...ANYWAY GOOD LUCK TO HER. THERE IS OTHER THINGS IN LIFE, AND SHE'S SO YOUNG, LOTS OF DREAMS, HOPES, JUST CHECK OUT HER WEBSITE. PEOPLE NEED TO DO MORE HOMEWORK ON CAOILI BEFORE MAKING COMMENTS. GET SOME PROPER INFO AND FACTS, CHECK DETAILS.!!
