British GM Sent Home

We have an update on this story. The Irish team blog says:
I didn't actually witness the following story, so I can't vouch for it's veracity but what I heard was that a star Armenian player was punched by an English grandmaster at the "Bermudan" party (the traditional main party at Olympiads) while dancing with a very pretty girl who plays for Austraila. The Armenians (who are currently in a comfortable lead in the Olympiad) did not take kindly to this and the English grandmaster has been sent home for his own safety.
We hear from a very reliable source that the English GM was actually allegedly bashed by the Armenians.

Sorry, Mr. Anonymous, didn't mean to offend your sensibilities. Also, Iggy just texted me to say he wasn't what I said he was - said he actually captained the 1994 Youth Squad to Malta.

Who's the English GM?

It is Danny Gormally. The Australian official team email reads:

"In breaking news about the Bermuda party last night, Armenia's gold medal chances have taken a dive after their top board was hit in the face by England's Danny Gormally. Apparently they were fighting over one of the Australian players..."

Pity the Asutralian ladies talents off the board not better directed to on the board.

Seems this team has a history of such things during the 1990's onwards.

Perhaps one of them should play board 3 for the Open team - the talents may help provide a distraction to gain points, they are wasted in the ladies section

None of Australia's female players are good enough to even be the 6th board for the open team.

Part of the problem with the womens team is that you only have to be 2100 FIDE strength to qualify, then its simply a matter of affording the airfare.

There are no female players in Australia who are serious about getting to 2400 strength and getting a real IM title.

Which is a pity. Maybe it will change in the future, but at the moment they are happy to be just
2100-2200 players.
