Wohl Takes the Lead
IM Alex Wohl today snatched the lead in the Australian Open when he defeated FM Jesse Sales in their round 6 encounter. The Pinoy player dropped a piece and looked to be lost, but he, in fact, had a saving maneouvre.

Saw Be1 with ideas of Qf1+ Kh4, Qf4+!(move was a bit difficult to see until you realise the bishop on g3 is pinned) Kh3, Qf1+ etc. with a draw by repetition.
White cannot stop this check because the squares f5 and g4 are covered. hmm... if the White Queen tries to cover the square f4 with Qd6, then c3 looks strong.
Just my 2 cents.
It is quite difficult to see this over the board in the heat of the moment sometimes.
I was the post-game analysis with Wohl and sales and other interested bystanders. Wohl actually showed this (saying he saw it but ...finger crossed) to Sales who totally missed it. Wohl then commented that he was indeed lucky!
BTW, have a look at Sales R 3 game with White where both players took the game into KID-Bayonet Attack. In post-game, Sales mentioned that B's move a5 may be an improvement. I have not check databases as yet to see whether this has been played.
Instead of Qf4, Black missed a win with Qb1 Kg2 Bd4 and White can resign.
