Hurrah for Public Schools

Here's an answer to my question yesterday.

It turns out that the NSW Junior Chess League isn't just for moneyed private school kids. The York Public School was in the comp and their boys and girls were winners, reports the Penrith Press. Well done to them. Even more impressive is that they were all apparently complete novices. That's one thing you can say about the public school system: it produces robust character, winning kids.

The public school system is an important catch-all, like Medicare. Independent schools are service driven and will always offer more in the way of academic rigour, chess, music and sport.

The fact that they are novices really tells you about the level of chess in NSWJCA. There is no junior under 18 rated above 2000 in Sydney. This organization requires some serious reforms. Look how many kids continue playing chess after 18; pretty much nobody.
