First Round in World Junior

Just a reminder that the World Juniors Championship is set to begin in Turkey. The Aussie duo of Gareth Oliver and Sarah Anton have tough assigments in the first round. Gareth is set to face Indian wunderkind GM Parimerjan Negi, while Sarah, who just finished competing in Biel and collecting 4 points from there, will front up against WFM Sona Pertlova.

I had an e-mail from Gareth earlier today and he was looking forward to the challenge. Having had a look at Negi's results lately I guess Gareth is going to be crushed, but he should enjoy the experience. :)

If anyone is interested, there are two rounds today - the early one starting at 5pm Aussie time.

The top 20 boards are being shown live in the Open and there should be some exciting games to watch. (including AR's favourite Wesley So).

In addition to Sarah Anton and Gareth Oliver flying the Aussie flag at the World Juniors, there is also a recent visitor to the "farthest shore" recently who is competing at the World Juniors: Swiercz, Dariusz IM (currently on 1.5 after 3 rounds). I understand that his sister is married to an Australian and Dariusz was over here visiting his newly born nephew over the summer. On the day before his plane back to Poland,Dariusz managed a joint 1st in the City of Sydney Rapid at Paramatta. (http://www.nswca.org.au/2008tournaments/CityOfSydneyRapid2008.shtml)
