A chess piece dating back to the 14th century has been found in Veliky Novgorod, in Russia.

When I first read this I wondered how ever the Russians managed to play chess with only one piece. However, on consulting the source, I find that a total of 82 pieces has been found allowing enough for 4 sets, if you are lucky, and some pieces left over, probably all black pawns. But it seems that also several feeding bottles for babies have been dicovered there. Does this mean that they played chess while feeding the baby or does it mean that chess was taught to babies? Either way it may exlain later Russian dominance of chess??
