The colours of the chess pieces were the first to change, they can now be any and all colors. The old colours were racially divisive white, red and black. It's a lot prettier this way too.
While now certainly multiracial, chess can only have one definite origin. According to Joseph A. Bailey, II, M.D., the game came right out of black Africa. Believe it or not.

His argument for chess originating in Africa seems rather weak, and his comment, "The object of the game, of which there are many versions, is for each player to try to capture an opponent's piece and to prevent the opponent from moving any pieces. Note how closely this resembles Chess as we know it today." seems to indicate he really doesn't know a lot about chess itself.
But that's just a general impression from what is probably a shortened version of a much bigger essay. Maybe some things were lost in the editing.
