Aussie Junior Beats Pinoy

This piece of news is old but it will be of some interest to our overseas readers - especially Filipinos. Thirteen-year old Australian junior Zhigen Lin topped the 2006 Elwood Bendigo Bank tournament in Victoria. Zhigen Lin secured first place on 6 points, a half point ahead of his nearest pursuers. His victims included IM Guy West and Pinoy FM Jesse Sales.

Sales, who is presently a resident of Melbourne, Victoria, scored only 4.5 points.

Sales was in an excellent position to win the tournament and looked set to do so having beaten Solomon in an exciting game but lost to Lin Zhigen Wilson and then Guy West in the last round. Lin Zhigen won the tournament ahead of GM Johansen, and several IMs.

Great result for Zhigen!

I was surprised too when I heard that Zhigen had won the tournament.

I thought Sales would beat him for sure but it seems the kid was having the tournament of his life.

Pity that Sales lost to Zhigen :(. Would he win - I would be able to play him in the last round for outright first :(.

By the way his score of 4.5/7 may look poor but he had to play a very tough field. For example he crushed Solo and drew with Sandler
