Chess Player Banned for Steroids

It had to happen sooner or later. After the controversy surrounding cheating with the use of electronic aids at the World Open, now we have a real case of steroid use by a chess player. And he's only 13-years old!

According to a news report, the 13-year old Bobby Baines "was one of 17 professional chess players ranging in ages from 8 to 97 years old, that are under suspicion for blood doping and taking drugs on the USCF list of banned substances".

I must say, the last 3 months - from that Gormallygate incident to an apparent suicide, then to the World Open controversy and finally this - has not exactly been the best for chess. What next?

Airplane spin...hmmm....at least he didnt jump from the chess table and polaxe his opponnent.

The thing I'm curious about is the fact that they tested a kid.
Strange behaviour by kids in tournaments isnt necessarily signs of doping.

Does anyone know what requirements the USCF has to meet to drug test its competitors?

it would just be the normal random testing. Everyone is included. It would have just been his turn.

It reads like an April fool's joke, especially the comments from Bobby's mother. Is this for real?

Yes!! I reacted the same way. I had to read this closely. It looks real enough.

RTFA fellas. It's a pisstake. The whole site is a pisstake. Trimming his ear hairs? Blood doping? Or this:

“If he’s been within ten miles of a copy of Penthouse, his testosterone readings will be way, way off. It’s just impossible to get an accurate measurement.”

Or this: "During one recent chess match, Baines hoisted his opponent into an Airplane Spin"

I know I'm overly sceptical but if this a real story I'll stand banging on the dunny door. Everything from the cliched stock pic to the "35 pounds of muscle in one week" claim to Valery Solov (obviously inspired by the real-life GM Valery Salov). It's just just a satire.

are they banning players who uses steroids because they don't want these chess players to make a STRONG move?

That's real good. Banning chess players now for having two cups of coffee and everything. I heard that at U.S. Open somebody was cheating with a device, getting moves from his Fritz at home. It show how much this game affects the minds of losers. By the way, check my blog if you are interested in Engine Chess Tournaments. I just got Ktulu 8 and Deep Junior 10.
